Gates of heaven and paradise

The layout of Berlin's inner city, its nature and architecture, reveals past and present visions of a better world. Some of these ideas occur repeatedly in paintings whose landscape and architectural conceptions were very influential for the city.

How can we rediscover conceptions of an idealised world that were laid out in 17th century French landscape painting in contemporary Tiergarten? What ideal does the antique formal canon of Brandenburger Gate reflect? Which vision is meant to be represented in the newly planned Potsdamer Platz?
